Understood Common Messages Project

Mary-Clare Reynolds, Executive Director of LDA America, contacted all state LDA affiliates regarding Understood’s Common Message Project. LDA and all other founding affiliates of Understood were invited to participate in using common language to share common messages about learning and attention difficulties. Organizations were encouraged to find creative ways to share this information. LDA Iowa participated in the 2nd, 3rd and now the 4th quarters of this year. For each event or activity submitted to Understood, an entry went into a random drawing for $500. Three winners were drawn each quarter. LDA-IA is proud to announce that it was a  winner for both the 2nd and 3rd quarters earning a total of $1,000 from Understood/the Poses Family Foundation. Entries have been submitted for the next deadline, but at this time, no awards have been announced for the 4th quarter.

Some of our activities included the following:
·      Fact Sheet of the 7 Common Messages distributed by board members
·      Facebook posts/videos for each of the 7 Common Messages
·      Looping slideshow/video at Conference Exhibit Table
·      Visit from Belarus educators/administrators – The Fact Sheet of the 7 Common Messages was distributed and discussion shared through an interpreter
·      LDA-IA Coordinator added (on a rotating basis) each of the 7 Common Messages in her LDA-IA email signature
·      Understood of Iowa hosted IEP Binder Parties throughout the state, and LDA-IA representatives attended in Waterloo, Sioux City, Dubuque, Mason City, Cedar Rapids, Oskaloosa, and Storm Lake. Handouts with the 7 Common Messages were distributed at those meetings.
